Open up the Start menu, Right click on "Search" and drag it to the desktop, release the mouse button and select "Create shortcut here".

Logo + F opens the same SEARCH screen as going through Start does. It does NOT go directly to 'All files and folders'.Bryco
If in Classic Start Menu - as I want to be,
neither right, nor left clicking on 'files and folders' allows dragging, after Start is clicked and then Search. If NOT in Classic, a shortcut to SEARCH CAN be dragged to the desktop, but it is still the Generic search, NOT 'SEARCH : all files and folders'

'SEARCH : all files and folders'
Apparently I need to be educated as I do not know what you mean by 'SEARCH : all files and folders'
Isn't that Windows Explorer?
When I open "Search Results" the first line says "Search for files or folders named:"
How do you access/display the one you are after?

"When I open 'Search Results' the first line says 'Search for files or folders named:'"I agree that when the page opens which has 'Search Results' in the address line,
in the left pane the first entry is 'Search for files or folders named:'
However, it takes 3 clicks to get there.
I have to click on Start, then on Search, and then on 'Files and Folders'.I was hoping to reduce that to just clicking on a shortcut to 'SEARCH : Files and Folders'.

Sure, everyone wants XP the way they want it.
In most cases that is not possible.I prefer the keyboard rather the moving the mouse and having to click.
Doing the LOGO key + F will eliminate two clicks
for you, and me. Thus eliminating two clicks. You say that the first item in the lefthand pane is 'Files and Folders'. If there is a series of dots around those words, then just hit the ENTER (or Return) key.
For me, 'files and folders' is the third item in the list. So I have to hit the DOWN arrow twice, then hit ENTER.
FYI, that lefthand pane is called "Search Companion". That is stated at the top of the pane.
Good luck in your search for perfection.

WinLogo + F on Win 2000 does exactly that...
To achieve this on Win XP just disable Search Assistant (search Google how to do that).
