shortcut to programs not showing up

hi, In the start menu there are shortcuts to programs that are most commonly used (if the start menu is the xp type, not classic)but for some reason no programs that i open show up. In properties, start menu, customize, it says number of programs on start menu. its currently on 5 but nothing is showin up on the start menu. Can any1 help?? thanks

Open a few programs using the start menu, not desktop icons. It most liekly wont work. Go to start, run, then type in sfc /scannow , have your windows cd ready. If it still doesnt work, then Im out of ideas for now

thanks for reply but wen it asks for the windows cd and i put it in, it says it doesnt recognise the cd. Im positive its the right cd because when i put it in it goes to the windows menu screen where it asks if i want to download xp, etc.
