I am at college right now, and I am using a lan scaner to seach for files. But to my surprise, all of my files (system, windows) were shared. I had to disable zonealarm for the search to work, but without it my whole computer is wide open. How do I unshare my C:!

note: I didn't check to share it manually, it did that by itself.

well, if you dont want to share at all. u can just disabled file/printer sharing, witch is a good thing to do anyway if your not using it.. Right click on 'my network places' on the desktop then click 'Properties' then right click your connection, witch is normaly named 'Local Area Connection' then uncheck the box that says "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" then hit ok, and ur all done..

if you dont have 'My network Places' on your desktop, you can goto "Network Connections" on your control pannel..

I forgot to add that if its only a folder that you dont want to share u can right click on that folder goto properties then sharing and uncheck "Share this folder on the network".. However this is only if you want to share specified directories/files with someone.

I disabled the file/printer sharing, but my whole computer was still avaliable over the network. I went in and made private the folders I really needed too, but how is it that by default my computer computer is shared?

And is there anyway to take files from the network, but not expose yourself to sharing?

Well, if you disabled file and printer sharing, then none of your files should be shared. Can you goto a friends computer and attempt to access the files off your computer? its possible they are only accessable from your machine, thats actually how my network is. other then that, i dont see how it can be sharing files if you have file sharing off (unless there is 3rd party software involved)..

hope this helps because i am outta ideas :(

Lol, read!!! Right click C, goto properties, if it's shared just uncheck 'Allow network users to change my files' Then they won't be able to delete, it'll be read only. =)

Ehab - I went into computer management and My C: and C:/windows are both there! But it won't let me take them out. I tryed hitting delete, and there is no option to take them off the share list. I'm in XP Pro, again.
