i have 2 computers and one is already connected to the internet through a cable modem. could i buy another cable modem and connect it to the other computer with the same internet connection? - bypassing the router? - what would i have to do to make this possible?

If having a router is your problem, you can simply use an ethernet crossover cable between the two computers, and set it up as a shared internet connection over the network. If that's not an option, (for whatever reason) then I'm afraid I can't help much. I have DSL myself.
