hi, we just had broadband installed. We have three computers and want to share broadband through a router. Any computer can connect to broadband fine directly, but not through the router.
Help?

I just installed xp on two machines and networked them through a router to share our broadband access and had no problems. Do all your computers when networked together show up in your "my network place/ workgroup?" Most networking problems are caused by simple misconfigurations. Make sure each computer uses the same workgroup name. What brand and model router are you using? Check out the router troubleshooting section.

It all depends on what typw of broadband you purchased. Different companies have different settings that have to be placed into the router in order for it to obtain an IP automatically. Some services don't require any settings but this doesn't seem to be the case with you. My advice would be to call the people you ordered the service from and ask them, what you are attempting to do is perfectly legal. Another option is to visit the routers manufactuer's(sp) website and see what info they have for networking computers. Finally I would direct you to a website that has tons of onfo and people who can help you with this type of thing: www.dslreports.com

check out their forums for superb info and help on setting up your router.

ttfn!

yes, chances are you have to configure PCs to your router not to you ISP.

you can check your router to see if at least it's connecting.

you'll most likely just want to run the network setup again.
select the gateway computer option.
to let your router control connections

also make sure your modem is plugged into the wan port.

when I first got hooked up the cable guy plugged it into a lan port.
needless to say it didn't work.

Katherine,

Call the router manufacturer. Speak with someone in tech support and they will walk you through the steps for configuring your router. Before you call, find out what your login and password is for your broadband service. Also make sure you know if your internet provider supplies a "static" or "dynamic" IP address. All of that info should be on your original account setup sheet.

Also, and as someone else mentioned, make sure you are connected to the router correctly.

Lastly, someone suggested that all PCs needed to be part of the same workgroup. This is not true for just connecting to the internet through a router. Correct workgroup setup only applies if you are setting up a home network, which is another step in this process if you wanna do that.

Good Luck!
