Hello,
I am here at University and this is quite a big network. I want to share a folder with one person via the LAN. I have one folder with permissions everybody, both as the folder settings and also as the sharing permissions.

I would like to share one folder with a friend but only allow him to have access. I have been playing around and testing around with users but either he can't access it. He has no problem connecting to access the "everybody folder" I would like to have him enter his username and password and then be able to see the folder.

Thanks for any replies.

You must add the username of the person to whom you wish to grant access to the directory security rights. For safety's sake add your own local administrators group to the folder as well.

Grant the administrator's group full rights. Grant the user who you are sharing with whatever rights you want him to have. Remove the Everybody user from the list.

Oh - forgot to add, if you are on a domain, you will just have to add his domain username.

If you are not on a domain, you will have to create a user account for this person on your machine.

Ok mate, thanks.

Here is what I did (following your steps).

I made a user in my PC identical to his username in his laptop.

In the directory security and in the share permission I put Administrators FULL and the user as I wish.

Is there anything else I should do?

If you have firewall software running you will have to accept the incoming connection.

Can your bud browse the network to find your computer?

If he typed \\yourmachine\sharename or even \\your.ip.addy.here\sharename does he get an error, a password challenge, or an explorer window?

Thanks for replying. It's very strange.

If I create that folder for him with only Admin and his username permissions then upon connecting to my PC the password dialog appears) not just for that folder. If I remove that folder and just have the public folder he can access it. Typically he can see my PC.

ANother problem is that he can't connect to my printer. We turned off the firewall for testing, same thing.... we setup a trusted network in the firewall anyway.

Cheers & thanks.

So was he able to enter his username and password to access the folder once you set the permissions?

I think the password challenge is normal. I guess I haven't ever tried leaving public shares out to test it, but now I'm curious and I'll give it a go when I get home.

If the printer is a) shared and b) given the right permissions he should be able to connect if he can access your PC file share correctly.

Thanks for your continued help and for checking for replies.

The password dialog appears and these are the formats are tried:

Workground\Username
Username

etc...

The dialog keeps coming again. Does the password need to be the same on both devices.

For example if I have one account called

AMG and another account on his laptop, and on the laptop there is a password but no on the PC... would this cause problems?
