i have had my dell for a few months and have since downloaded alot of music, and videos, etc. but i am getting a new sony vaio desktop and was wondering if i could transfer the files to that computer with out burning alot of cds or re-downloading all the files
Sure, click start,programs,acessories,system tools,files and settings transfer wizard and take a look. Be sure to read the help file.

The xfer wizard might work for you, but I have heard some bad things about it.
You can xfer files easily without it, just run the Network Setup on both pc's (and enable file sharing). Make the disk when prompted on the first (host) pc and use that disk to set up the second pc.
Whichever option you choose, make sure you use a Cross-Over cable, not a regular RJ45 patch cable.

A simple peer-to-peer network would allow it. A NIC in each PC, a cross-over (cat-5 utp) cable between them. Software you aleady have in all current (and not so) M$ OS.
