After running SFC /SCANNOW, I looked at my HD and found free space went from 20.5GB to 19.7GB. Where did this 800MB go and how can I get it back? I tried Disk Cleanup and Defrag with no luck. Thanks

Maybe you meant you gained 800MB. Some applications or virus/spyware may have altered numerous system files on your system; that's why sfc reverted them back to the original state which is bigger.

Check this folder %windir%\system32\dllcache
When you run sfc /scannow it restores all of the original Windows files into this folder. You can remove them by running sfc /purgecache
Hope this helps, Sandman

I'm virus/spyware free, and dllcache was over 500MB, but none of the files in there had been modified since January. Does running purgecache have any negative repercussions?

As long as you have an Xp cd it won't cause any problems. When a system file gets corrupted or goes missing Windows looks in the dllcache folder for the replacement. If it cannot find it there it will ask for an Xp cd. Any files sfc needs will be in the i386 folder on the Xp cd.
