Have you put your windows or recovery cd into the cd drive?

If you have, then you might need to edit the registry to look in the correct drive.

Have a look here

Before posting try google. Backup. Use anti virus software.

When you run scannow at logon you do not get a progress bar... This can easily be remedied by adding a new DWORD: SFCShowProgress to the registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

the values available are: 0 = disabled, 1 = enabled

this is what i need to do then>?

If you loaded Windows from a regular CD, the Windows CD must be in a CD drive when you run sfc /scannow.
If your Windows installation is a brand name system one, I'm not sure what that situation requires - the original files sfc is required to check against or restore from may already be on the hard drive in which case you don't need to insert a CD, or may be on a Recovery CD if the computer came with one.

Something you have running may be interfering with sfc and/or be causing it to restart many times, and/or you may be getting an error message but it is displayed so fast and then disappears you're not seeing it.
If you use Start - Run - cmd, then sfc /scannow, you may then get an error message that normally is displayed so fast you can't read it before it disappears.
Try disabling everything in Msconfig - Startup that starts up with Windows, disabling any screen saver you have loaded that didn't come with Windows if that applies, and disabling any antivirus or anti-adware or other program resident module that constantly monitors that isn't turned off by disabling everything in Msconfig - Startup (e.g. a mboard temp/rpm monitoring utility).

Something is definately slowing it down. E.g. recently for me on a computer with a 64gb Windows partition, 3ghz cpu (64 X2 6000+), 2gb of ram, it takes about 20 minutes.
Did you try doing any of the things I suggested before you started it?

Your internet not working doesn't necessarily mean there is anything wrong with your system.
I have frequently occaisionally had ADSL connection problems that have nothing to do with my system(s).
Have you tried re-setting your high speed modem (e.g. unplug it's power adapter at the modem end, plug it back in a few seconds later, wait until the staus leds are right, boot or reboot the computer, try the internet).
If the status leds don't get right, your internet service provider is having problems between you and the source, or there is something wrong with your cable connection that connects you to the internet (e.g. for DSL or ADSL, make sure the jack is plugged in properly and the cord is okay).
Have you asked anyone you know who is using the same internet provider whether they are having problems?

Well for SCF Scan some times it will take a long time because it verifies ALL system files and corrects or fixes any errors.

For me once it took 2 hours ,but the system was very full of every editing program you can think of and all running. It may be best to go into msconfig startup and disable all before scan.

But as long as it finishes.

Check to see in bios that APM (Advance Power Management ) is enable if it is then disable it. This may speed up the scan.
