Formatted hard drive and trying to install XP Pro from Win 98 MS-DOS recovery disk. It won't boot up from the CD-ROM (BIOS?) and when I call SETUP.exe from DOS it says "program can't run in MS-DOS".

You have to change the boot sequence in the bios so that the cd-rom is listed first. Then reboot your pc with the win xp cd in the cd rom drive. A legal win xp cd is bootable. If for some reasons you cannot boot from the cd, you have make 6 boot disks at the microsoft web site or any web sites that you know. Then reboot your pc with the #1 disk in drive A. Hope this helps. bye

the command is not"setup"
its winnt.exe in directory"i386"
on the CD
example:"D:/i386/winnt.exe"

of course booting from the CD is a lot easier and faster

Yup go to the I386 folder on the cd and run winnt.

this is somewhat slow because of the absense of the smartdrv

smart thing to do is if you have a win98 cd kicking around is to boot up with that with the cdrom support go into the win98 directory and do "smartdrv" this loads the smartdrv into memory
swap win98 cd with the winxp cd and then go to the i386 folder and run winnt.exe
makes the setup go comparable to booting right off the cd
