Ok, Here is my situation... Let me start off by saying I am pretty computer literate, I have been building and upgrading computers for about 10 years. My buddy has a Compaq laptop that has a nasty virus on it and usually I can fix these kind of things but the laptop crashed and now will NOT boot into windows. Before it crashed it would not even boot into safemode. So here is what I was thinking I would do. I have 2 500 gig external hard drives, so I was thinking I would transfer his important files (music, text, etc etc) onto one of my externals but I know dos won't recognize the external hard drive. Please remember when responding to my question that I can not boot into windows but I can boot to a win98 boot disk. So any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated...

Thanks in Advance

there is no dos in xp.
you'll need to pull that drive, get an adapter to connect that harddrive to an ide cable in another pc. or get a usb enclosure for the drive, and usb it to another pc to get those files.
run the antivirus on the drive imediately after its connect to another computer.

Although there is no DOS in XP the files can still be accessed from a Win98 boot disk providing the folders are formatted in FAT32. If they are NTFS then you are going to have to put the disk into a computer running Windows 2000/XP.

It probably won't work if the laptop does not have legacy USB support enabled via BIOS. Without it I THINK the Win98 diskette won't be able to recognize the USB drive (haven't tried it myself)

Since you helpfully inform us about how you are "savvy' on computers, I guess it is unnecessary for us to remind you about using a LiveCD (XP or Linux-based) to access those files, and burn them to CDs...
