Can anyone help me how to set up DNS and web server? My friend said that Apache is one of the programs to set the web server from own computer. I've installed it but don't understand how it works. I try to use BIND to set the DNS. Suppose I have already had a domain, how can I set it? Any help would be really appreciated. Email would be better though. Thanks.

Hey,

If you are using XP, why dont you install IIS as it comes with XP. This will act as a web server. GO to add remove programs, then add windows component.

Good Luck

Thanks a lot for the information.
Can you explain more detail how to set up the web server in order for me to create a webpage from a domain? Actually, what's the function of dns and web server? I hope I can publish a webpage in a short time.

Once IIS is installed onto ur PC, will will automatically run as a WebServer. THere isnt much you have to do! If you require DNS aswell, then we can d\load an application called: janaserver which will run DNS requests and is free if your not a business! but i havent played with it much so i dont know how its set up. From what iv heard its easy...

don't install IIS...it has holes, and it's a favorite for hackers to hack...the IIS flaws are well known. Apache is good.

dns server is one in which a computer can translate an address into an ip address (like www.google.com to 111.222.333.444)

web server is one in which a computer can request files, such as html files

Thats why after you install IIS, d/load approriate patches from MS web site and There is also a Microsft IIS Lock Down tool that will secure IIS.

Thanks a lot for all the replies. I installed both IIS and Apache right now. But don't know how to set it. For example, if I have a domain name, what should i do to make the domain name can be viewed as webpage? What DNS server program should I used? I hope I can have a webpage set from my own computer.
