I called CompUsa to install new Hard drive on my computer and they said they are not able too unless the have the OS cd the tag on the comp. or Cert. of Win Xp. The guy I bought it from ripped off the tag and did not give me OS system Cd. What Can I do? Is their any way I can check these things on my comp.

The fact of the matter is, that MICROSOFT requires you to have this sticker as part of the licensing agreement. Not having this is sorta like the same thing as removing the license plates from your car. You need to get ahold of whoever you bought the thing from, and demand the license, or else a good, licensed, legitimate copy of X tra P utrid.

Collect your system from CrapUSA, install the HDD and load the OS yourself, if you do not have an XP disc, you'll need to purchase a retail personal copy of XP.
We all should pitch in, if we truly want to keep Bill on top (12th year) of that Forbes list as long as consecutively possible.
Hooray for stuff !!!.

As a system builder, we recently received reminders on the licensing requirements. As noted by "name" MS requires the sticker to be affixed to the system or the OS can't be loaded by any retailer/reseller. The EULA also states that the sticker can't be removed for use on a different system, the license becomes a permanent part of the system and can't be transferred. Without a sticker you can't do an install since XP REQUIRES registration with MS to activate it. As "Sabertooth" notes the only option you have is to get a retail copy and install it. Some resellers can sell you a hard drive and you can purchase an OEM copy of XP at a reduced price. No matter what method you use, the license sticker is needed and on top of that the tag for the sticker states it must be affixed to the system. The only exception is the XP packages I see from the MS store that have the key on the package with the CD, these are NFR (not for resale) packages.
Best of luck

If he did not sell you the O/S (meaning the CD and the COA) then I don't think you can demand it from him. It depends what you negotiated for. Even though that copy of the O/S may be tied to the computer by Micro$oft, the computer is not tied to any particular O/S.

The new EULA that comes with XP states that the computer is tied to the O/S once it has been installed and activated on the MS site. As I mentioned we received clarification on this from them to prevent selling or servicing any systems incorrectly. This is a change from their previous licensing.

XpUser - I rechecked the EULA and from what it seems to say the license may be transferred to another workstation or rights transferred to a third party on a one time basis. We are still not doing sticker shifts on customer systems to prevent any confusion on the provided service.
I would not be surprised to see I missed something in the text or that they are changing it in the future.

Like everyone is saying you do need the licence and the CD in order to install WinXP. You said bought a new HD who has the old Had Drive? If you have it and you bought the PC then the OS on that system (WINXP?) should be yours too. NOT his. Was WinXP on the old HD? Is the PC operational? If it is find or borrow a WindowsXP CD and RE-install it yourself. For the license or Product Key if Windows XP was previosly running on your system and all you need is the Product Key then go to Magical Jelly Bean, www.magicaljellybean.com download and install Magical Jelly Bean Key Finder on your system to locate your Product Key on the old HD. and go from there, but Only if you had WinXP running on your old HD.
