Is there any difference in service packs for just plain windows xp and windows xp professional?
I downloaded and installed sp3 on my win pro machine. Before the install the windows screen comes up at boot up saying it is win xp pro but after installing it just says windows xp.

IIRC, service pack 2 brought the features of Windows XP Pro to Windows XP Home, so really now, it is just "Windows XP".
In short, what you see is completely normal.

The Service Pack's are applicable to Home, Professional and MCE Editions, there is no difference, it will install the updates required by the system.
I believe the dropping of versions on the splash screen was undertaken in SP2.

I don't think so. I have both Windows XP Prof and Windows Home with SP3 and there is still the same differences between the two. Try creating a User group on XP Home for starters. You can't and never could.
What the splash screen says has little to do with what is actually there.

I read that somewhere over 2 years ago. Maybe my memory is failing me once again. I do know that the version name was dropped from the boot screen in SP2.
