I suggest you visit the Compaq web site for this issue.

You are not the only one, a large number of Compaq built units had issues with internet connection after installing SP2.

Their tech support section should be able to help you out with this.

We have approx 500 units from them in this company that run XP Pro and we cant install the sp2 pack, as it kills the lan connectio,

You ask why ?? something to do with the pc config.

I dont know the answer to your question, but i would say NO for the moment.

This issue seemed to be confined to the rigs which were originaly formated with XP Pro.

But if you can give me a specification list of your computer we should be able to point you in the right direction.

Janos, can you link to the information you're talking about regarding SP2 on compaq's site? My organization has a large number of Compaq workstations also, but I am not aware of any problems with SP2 specific to compaqs. Or, can you list the model numbers of the affected computers? I'd be interested to learn more about this.

Hi Jimminy !!

This is waht I know.

About 16 months ago or so our organisation upgraded all of the workstations within the company, not sure about exact number but close to a thousand or so, dont quote me.

They were mostly celerons 1.7 with intel based boards with the 845G chipset and on board intel lan crads.

All were imaged with win2000 pro and a dual Xp licenece. About 6 months ago a number of them were reimaged with the Appropriate xp licences, as part of the xp rollout.

Shortly after that sp2 was released and a number of workstations were updated with sp2 uppon which time all conection to the lan and our servers, was lost.

Uppon investigation compaq informed us that SP2 needed to be removed, as we did this all connections were restored back to normal.

To the best of my knowledge they gave us no specific reason as to why.

Arround the same time, I did receive some news from the Zdnet news informaton that A number of system builders had issued instructions to users not to install sp2 on the Xp based stations.

I dont have a direct link as to this information as I never looked into it any further, but I do know that our XP roll out has stopped, and those workstations which require a new image are being done with XP but no SP2 is installed, and with specific instructins to end users not to install sp2.

laoyes post exibited this specific problem and the fact he qutoed a compaq work station got the memory working that he might have the same issue.

As we also do have some 2.6 units also, used on specific aplications. I dont know if its hardware related or if its a windows fire wall related in reference to the way these systems have been built.

I would love nothing better than to be able to give you a direct link, thats why i suggested he goes and has a look at the support site, if there is anything there.

One thing Laoye can try is to uninstall sp2 and see if the connection is reastablished.

I will attempt to drain some more direct info from the on site support staff, but I wont hold my breath though, as helpfull as they are, not much info has come out.

But I can tell you this directly, and its only my personal opinion, shared by a few lets just say ppl in the know, but the units are dogs.

Burnet out boards, blown power supplys, dud ram modules, crashing hard drives, etc.

Little else I can tell at this time, on the subject sorry to say jimmi.

As I said I will ask a few discreet questions.

regards

Jimminy !!

Further to my post above.

I have managed to get some additional information for you.

it seems that the possible issue is related to machines with Novel Client.

The little I was able to find out, is version 6 of Novel has compatibility problems with xp and service pack 2 ugrades.

The specifics of the issue I was not able to find out.

So I would presume that those users that dont use that version of Novell shouldnt have any problems. By rights !!!

Hope that was a bit more help to you.
