every time I try to install the xp service pack 2 it hangs up when it starts to back up the registry why is this doing this

Well, it does this because - Service Pack 2 is terrible.
Don't install it.

You must be using a different SP2 to me, viaro, cause it works fine for me! I think it's unfair to label it this way, when it is like any other software - not infallable. Once the criteria for installing it have been met, it installs ok in every case I have encountered, which is a good number in my work. The benefits of having it far outweigh any problems encountered during the install.
