Backing up is always a wise practice. I always do this every once in a while just to be on the safe side.

If everything goes ok with no errors, then you will not loose anything...But if you install SP2 and your system is unable to boot or anything like that, then you will loose data. Most of the time, everything will be installed and upgraded fine...

I better back up, up to the wall cos XP User wants to get married to me lol.
Seriously though Rory one of the first things that people learned in the days of yore, when floppy disks where king was to Save,Save,Save all the time.
This still applies to this day.
I run Publisher when I need to do certain things and every so often this asks "You have been working for x minutes do you want to save your work"
So, as I say back up all the time but don't download SP2 just yet.

You got it the wrong way round Per mate, he should offer his throat, wish wish lol.
Still gotta decide on a best man,it's a pity more ladies don' frequent C.N as XP could ask for bridesmaids.

But listen and now I'm serious.
I got the SP2 disk delivered the other day but for the life in me I can't find where to make a back up, on to a 4.7gb dvd rather than use make sys point/restore.
If this was a tower unit rather than a laptop I would do it, but I'm thinking mmmmm.....
What's the train of thought?

Will it all fit on a dvd? Actually SP2 builds a backup on the install and the uninstall file is linked to an entry in the add/remove in control panel. I have used it and it worked for me. I am not familiar with laptops but I guess they work the same.

What I just wanted to do was just back up the os rather all my other stuff Per.
I know what you say is reasonable but, and don't think I'm being dramatic here, it's like poisoning your dog then when it falls over and says you ****, you then feed it medicine to make it better.
The point I make is why should the dog ever love you again?
Do you follow my reasoning?

I think I understand now. You just want to back up the windows folder and the root files like boot.ini, ntldr, etc? And I assume you do not have a dvd drive on the laptop.
Now that I think it through, if SP2 fails and won't uninstall you can always run a system restore from the xp cd and that will restore the whole system without any updates. You won't lose anything except the updates. Hope I am on the right track here for what you want to do.

Then I guess you would burn the windows folder and the root files to the dvd and make it bootable on the burn and then reinstall from it if needed. I make all my bootable backups using ghost disk to disk to another hd. Not sure if you can do that from a dvd disk. but at least you would have the o/s to copy from. Sorry I can't be more help.
