serial not found on start up & invalid Windows copy

May 21, 2013 at 15:06:15
Specs: Windows 7
Some automatic upgrades for Windows were downloaded last Wednesday night. Since Thursday, the laptop is showing that the Windows version is invalid (though it has been the same all along).

Also, we notice that on start up the screen shows "Serial number not found" in the upper left hand corner.

According to some of the research I have seen, there is a recommendation to reset the default values on BIOS. Does anyone have any ideas for either of these issues?

The BIOS settings have nothing to do with Windows validity, there's no reason to reset to defaults. You listed your OS as Win7 but you're posting in the XP forum. We need to know which Windows version you're asking about. And please post the exact error message about windows being invalid. You may have picked up a virus or malware.
