Solved Secondary monitor enter Power Saving Mode at XP login screen

August 11, 2013 at 06:50:18
Specs: Windows XP
For the last two years I have used Windows XP with two monitors: Primary screen is a Samsung and the second a Fujitsu/Siemens 17" flat screen monitor. When the latter died recently I replaced it with a 17" flat screen Dell E172FP monitor.
On booting up, the Dell duplicates all the setup screens and eventually shows the Windows logo. However when the primary Samsung screen asks for the Windows login details, the Dell goes into power saving mode and refuses to come back to life. As the early screen displays are perfect I doubt that solutions involving replacing capacitors etc are relevant to my setup.
Can anyone suggest a solution please?

OK - sounds like since you swapped the monitor the display adapter needs to extend or duplicate to your new monitor. Have you checked your display settings in XP? Although it should have changed, you may need to re-extend or tell Windows that you want to duplicate to that monitor (I am assuming extend).

Here is a link on how to use Windows to configure your second monitor:

Many thanks jpag3074 - despite the two screens numbered 1 & 2 were showing number 2 was not active. Silly me!
Also discovered that XP ceases to be supported after April 2014.

Glad to hear! You are absolutely correct! Time to make the move to Windows 8.1 :)

If by any chance you wish to continue with XP beyond April then see these:

Nothing too significant happens after end of support - you can still use your computer. Security updates cease so that is the most important issue, which the above links help to address.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
