After installing Windows XP Pro, it will not
recognize the secondary IDE devices (Zip
drive and CD-Rom drive). They will show
up in Safe-mode just fine, but when going
into normal mode the computer will halt
for about 8 minutes on a black screen
and then enter Windows. The drives do
not show up in the device manager and I
have tried setting the Secondary IDE
controller to both DMA and POI. My
computer is a Asus A7V mother board,
800Mhz Athlon Thunderbird. I recently tried updated drivers from asus and the new 4-in-1 drivers but to no avail. Any more insight would be appricated. Thanks.

I had the same problem only with my Maxtor and Western Digital hard drives. it would detect the Maxtor but not the Western Digital. If I re-booted, the both drives would be detected! Both were hooked to the ATA100 controller. Asus told me to connect each drive to a separate cable and use the cable select option. They are now both being detected but I'm still having terrible problems with system crashes (blue screens of death and the like!) I also updated my bios and have all the latest drivers for my hardware. I'm using a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound card, ATI Radeon VE video card, Best Data PCI V92 Modem, Liteon DVD drive, TDK 10-16-40 burner and an Iomega internal Zip Drive. I'm thinking that there is a problem with the motherboard as there seems to be no other explanation.

Hi folks,
Yeah, I used to have that kinda problem but not any more. I have 40GB Maxtor 7200rpm and 30 GB Western 7200rpm also. Run good. What i did is run them each on a diff. ribbons. and restart computer and went to CMOS and manually detected all my IDE drives. After that, everything is working just fine. Remember, although, you are running on two diff ribbons but BEST to set 1 IDE to be master and slave for other. This only work for me, P4 1.7GHz ATi motherboard and ATi Rage Rury.
So good luck,
JP
