I have a 2.26Ghz p4 @ 533 FSB, with asus p4s533 motherboard with 645DX chipset, and have a problem with my secondary IDE channel. Anything I plug into it is not recognized. I have tried numerous cables, and no luck. The BIOS does not auto-find anything either. It just says NONE for anything connected to secondary IDE channel. In the BIOS I have it set to auto find whatever is on the 2nd IDE, but it finds nothing. I have set the BIOS from auto to CDROM for both master and slave. still nothing. My primary IDE works fine, master, and slave. Win XP professional does not seem to find anything on 2nd IDE either. I have the master cdrom on the 2nd IDE channel set to master, and the other CDRW drive set to slave. Should I change them both to cable select, or no? By the way, should I be using a 80 pin cable, or a 40 pin cable for the 2nd IDE cable? I have a 80 pin on IDE 1, and a 40 pin on IDE 2. If anyone has any ideas, they would be SO greatly appreciated! thanks a bunch!

try setting the jumpers to cable select, and you should be using 80-pin cables for IDE.

well hard drive should be 80 pin, other things like cdrom are 40 pin.

is your mobo old? maybe it's broken? In my bios, i can specify things for either channel, but there is a setting in another menu that will enable or disable the channel. So search completely through bios.

If you want to use cable select, there has to be a special cable for that (i read it somewhere)...one of the pins has to be used to let the bios determine which will be master.
