In clearing a downloaded trojan/worm combo (thanks to my brother...) AVG put this file in the virus vault. Assuming it wasn't a necessary system file, more like a wolf in a sheep skin, I deleted the vault. AVG made no mention to it actually being a legit .sys file.

So my computer has been hardcore crashing since then, quarter second of sound looping, computer dying but not switching off/restarting, etc.

In the events manager, the only logs that looked like they would cause a crash were:

The Secdrv service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

-and-

The RpcImpersonateClient call failed with the following error:
No security context is available to allow impersonation.

However, this crash (and event log) only seem to happen with World of Warcraft running. And generally within 5-10 minutes of it starting.

secdrv.sys is part of SafeDisc copy protection used by some games....WOW being one of them.

Thanks for the reply,I just found an installer for it and some random fix off the microsoft site. (Was causing games not to work, the fix was for that apparently)

I restarted my PC and such, but it seemed to make little/no difference. It still crashed, though the second time actually still had a picture (but still as hard crashed as other times)

I'm not getting either of the event logs showing up anymore, but my PC is crashing so suddenly that there is nothing logged to show what is causing it, I think.

I have no idea what is causing it, because WoW was working fine before the system file was deleted. I played for a good 2 hours straight, now I'm stuck with 2 minutes IF I'm lucky. Common sense would rule that the file deletion would cause the problem, but it seems to be just a coincidence.

Any other idea's on what could cause a sudden lock up with sound looping ONLY in game? Furthermore, something done (obviously) by removing a virus? I don't think anything else was deleted in terms of .sys files, only a bunch of .exe files the virus had spread to.

It's off =(

My friend was "Tweaking" my system for better game performance, and I never bothered to turn it back on. I'll hunt him down and smite him later...

After running another bunch of tests, it definantly won't crash in windows, it seems only to do so in-game. Fast becoming a disgruntled PC user and seriously considering buying a mac =P *Duck and cover*

You want better performance, try overclocking your CPU. Of course, you didn't list your specs so your system may be lacking elsewhere (RAM, video, motherboard).

How about backing up any saved games, then uninstalling WOW? Reboot, then clean up with CCleaner (both cleaner & "issues"). Reboot again, then reinstall WOW.

CCleaner is #1 most popular:

It's a pretty solid system, 6600GT, 1.5gig DDR 400, with the 3000+ CPU.

It does the job and does it pretty decently =P
Not top of the line, but like I said. Solid.

Further testing has indicated it isnt just WoW that is affected, Guild Wars (Another MMO-esque game) did the same thing.

The more I see, the more I think it may be faulty ram. Gunna sleep on it (Been up all night cursing it =P ) and if its still fubar, I'll run a diagnosis proggy or two.

Thanks for the help, guys. I'll keep you appraised of the situation after my head is rebooted =)

nForce3 based motherboard?

Is your RAM 1GB + 512MB or 512MB x 3?

Just an update, been doing a MS Knowlege base crawl, the error I have been getting (7005) seems to mostly happen with server versions of Windows, havn't been able to find anything resolving the issue with XP Home (Shudder)

Other people I saw on random forums are having same issues and the same entry into their event logs, but none have been resolved that I have seen.

I'm currently downloading (via torrent) a new .iso so I can reinstall windows, last ditch effort (No doubt it will work though).

Thanks for all your input and help, guys. If I can get wine running, I might just not reinstall windows =P
