I am having a problem that is driving me crazy and hope someone can help. Everytime I start up my computer a message comes up saying windows is searching for a file (there is a little flashlight) to install. I assume that sometime I tried to install a program that was not totally installed. Since it wasn't, the windows installer is searching for that file to complete the installation. The problem is that I don't know what program it was. I do remember that I tried to install a program that didn't succeed.

Is there someone that could tell me how to turn off this annoying message box. I know that if I could remember the program that I could reinstall it and then uninstall it. It is just that I don't know.

Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions. If there is a registry fix, I am comfortable with working in the registry.

I have tried system restore but it doesn't make any difference.

Thanks again!!

Jennifer,

It just has the flashlight moving back and forth that says it is searching for a file. Never does say what file!

Thanks for responding. Any other ideas?

How
to Perform a Clean Boot in Windows XP

To help troubleshoot error messages or other
issues when you cannot determine the cause of
the issue, disable common startup programs,
settings, and drivers to eliminate possible
software conflicts when you start Microsoft
Windows XP. This procedure is known as
"clean booting."

If all else fails, go online and find a registry file cleaner (Registry Mechanic)run it and it should clean up all the crap outta your registry, sound like your PC is looking for a program that you might have uninstalled but a registry file is still telling your pc its still there!!!
