i am using windows xp as an OS. I am facing the problem with the search feature. Whenever i click on the search (start>search) or (Anyfolder -- Right click > search) it tries to connect to the internet and when i presses cancel to the dialup connection box it gives the error stating "Cannot start the search companion Run the setup" and then it opens the search window but with no text boxes and options. do i need to run the setup again? isn't there any other remedy around? please help

Try to run System File Checker, this solved same problem I had several months ago. Insert the original XP CD, click Start > run, type into the line sfc /scannow (leave a space after sfc). This may take a few minutes and all missing or corrupted system files will be replaced.

Also to say, you should get more RAM.
XP uses all of 128 to run properly.
It slows things down if you have programs starting and running in the background during Startup.
Also when you open programs, things are slower
if they have to take RAM away from XP.

you can also hack your registry to get rid of that annoying search interface and go back to a more user friendly win2000 search.
open regedit
hkey_current_user
softwear
microsoft
windows
current version
explorer
cabnet state
in here you add a new string by right clicking new and selecting new string value
name it
Use Search Asst
double click it and under the value type in
NO
hit ok, close your reg and go to search. old win2000 style. i love it.adue
