I've got a strange problem here. The Search Companion feature on my PC isn't working properly.

It runs fine, I can enter searches and it finds some files. However, after a while of searching nothing else happens. The progress bar stil moves from left to right but the location of files it's searching in stops moving and no other files are found.

When I click on STOP, the STOP button gets grayed out but the progress bar still moves from left to right.

I can close the Search Companion without any problems (not even needing an 'End Now' dialogue box).

I have no idea why this has happened or a fix.. any ideas anyone?

Open Explorer and go to the Windows\Inf folder. Locate the srchasst.inf file. Right click it and select Install. You'll need your XP CD or the files from the I386 folder. (This fix will require you to have your Win XP CD).
The Windows\Inf folder is a hidden folder. You can adjust your Explorer Folder Options (View tab) to Show hidden files and folders. You can also click Start, Run and enter %SystemRoot%\Inf to open directly to the Inf folder.

Problems with the Windows XP Search feature?
http://www.legge40.freeserve.co.uk/...
When you use the Windows XP Search feature does it start the process, seem to pause for a while, and then resumes the search? Do searches seem to take for ever, and while it is pausing, do all of the processor's cycles seem to go be involved in the search, and does Windows XP seems to be locked up temporarily? - If so, you will probably be able to cure the problem by disabling Windows XP's built-in ZIP file management.

How is this feature turned off? - On the Start => Run command line enter - 'regsvr32 %windir%\ system32\ zipfldr.dll /u' - without the quote marks, or spaces between the backslashes. To enable the functionality, repeat the process without the '/u' switch.

Don't Like the "New and Improved" XP Search Window?
Windows XP has a new style search window that asks "What do you want to search for?" and gives you a list of choices. If you prefer the old "Search for Files and Folders" search window from Windows 2000, you can get it back easily by downloading Tweak UI from the Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP web site at:

After you install it, run the program and in the Explorer sub-menu, in the right details pane, check the box that says Use Classic Search in Explorer. No more search dog!
