when right clicking start and trying to use search (where you search for a file), I get a message "A file that is required to use search companion can't be found. You may need to run setup."

I read this article and tried following it. Right-click Srchasst.inf file and then click install. When right clicking, I do not see install.

According to the link I gave you, did you place your Windows XP CD in the CD-ROM drive to finish installing Search Companion? If you only have Restore CD or Recovery CD that came with your PC, this method may not work for you.
