Greetings,I have this HP m470n PC with a Seagate 160 GB hd.(Bought at Garage Sale for $65}At Bootup, a message displays"Reboot and select proper Boot Device or insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key",and stops there. So I Removed it, replaced it with an old 4 Gb hd,and it booted. I then installed this Seagate hd as a "slave", Found it! I formatted the 160 hd,INSTALLED xP Shut down the pc, Hooked the 160 up as Master, Back to the "Reboot and select proper Boot Device or insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key"?? I have tried Jumpers as per Seagate Recommendation for master, I have tried a different jumper, to no avail...In a nutshell, 160 gb works as slave, not as Master. I have the ribbon cable attached as Master, not as Slave...So I think I'm missing something simple, but what. Thanks for any Help http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/... -EZ

Have you changed the little jumper on the rear of the drive from 'slave' to 'master'?
EDIT: Forget this I've just noticed that you've tried the jumpers!

With it configured as master, does it show up as primary master in the bios?
Silence is golden but duct tape is silver

Yes, it does show as :"First Channel Master".
Also, I took this Seagate 160 hd, to another good pc, Same thing, will not boot(recognize).

IMO No wonder why the seller wanted to get rid of the obviously defective product - it's a case of Caveat Emptor and it doesnt just mean just Buyer Beware but also Buyer Think For Yourself. Next time don't buy anything mechanical from the garage sales - buy only original paintings (no imitates) - who knows they may be worth millions.

Hookup as primary and boot xp cd. When it gets to setup the partition section, is the 160gb drive seen there? I'm pretty sure things got messed up when you installed xp on the drive configured as slave as I was unaware the xp setup would look for any drive other then master to install on.

Not booting has nothing to do with master/slave. You can boot a slave also.
might want to contact seagate and see if its still under warranty. You can return it and get a new one.
I have seen this behavior before and its a defective drive. Track0 is defective which is why it doesn't boot.
BTW you can install XP to any drive in your system you point it to. It will still boot from the first primary active partition found in the system.
Imagine the power of knowing how to internet search

With the 160GB setup as Slave when you installed XP on it, the MBR was obviously on the (Master) 4GB. If the boot record is not on the 160GB, it shouldn't boot.
You need to write a new boot sector to the 160GB partition that you've now configured as the primary boot device.

Go to Seagate and download SeaTools for Windows. Run the Diagnostic Program. It will detect any problem with the HDD.

You can also config XP from the 4GB drive to 160GB using Seagate DiskWizzard.
SeaTools And DiskWizzard are both free.
Of course, this all depends on the 160GB being good. Check the Cable Plug for debris and the HDD socket for bent pins. Wouldn't hurt to check Motherboard Plug & cable as well. Been there.
There is nothing to learn from someone who already agrees with you.

HP is now running, Thank you to all EXCEPT one for the help. Seagate tools did it.

Caveat Emptor - Buying & Selling in Secondlife link?? Okie dokie
Silence is golden but duct tape is silver

XpUser,
Did you read that link? It has no bearing on garage & yard sales as we know it ... LOL
That is like informing someone of the dangers of not always paying for their gas & groceries strictly in cash, because online CC phishing is pandemic.

My badness I posted the wrong link in the wrong forum but thanks for bringing it up :-)
