Out of nowhere my screensaver stopped activating automatically. I've tried restarting, changing the screensaver, changing the time before screensaver activates, all with no luck. I can preview the screensaver and it will stay on until I hit a key or move the mouse so I have ruled out a faulty mouse or some other piece of hardware keeping my screensaver from activating. Also, I have checked the registry for SCRNSVR.exe and it exists and should start at login. I've checked the power settings and hibernation is turned off and and all other power options are disabled. I did check to see if my moniter would turn off when I chose the option to turn off automatically after 1 min and it stayed on. Can this have something to do with NVIDIA? I downloaded an update form microsoft and I'm thinking this may be the problem. I had the same problem before but it resolved by itself. This time it hasn't resolved. I'm running window's xp home, pentium iv, 512 mb ram, with a geforce graphics card, but I don't know the exact model (I'm at work right now). If anyone has suggestions I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

That thread is in reference to a worm and windows 98. I am not sure if I am having that problem. Apparently, "scrsvr.exe" was a worm that infected windows 98 but I have found in another forum that "SCRSVR.EXE" in windows xp is a legitimate file.

You could try removing the Update in the ADD/REMOVE Programs, to see if it starts working
again.I did a Critical Security Update for IE, and then found that my Windows Help Index Help Topics were all gone. Removing the Update brought them back. That update is:
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 (KB832894)
and was shown in Add/Remove Programs as:
Internet Explorer Q832894

scrsvr.exe is not a legitimate windows file - it is the OPASERV virus.

scrsvr.exe is a virus that infects windows 98. Windows XP is not vulnerable to this virus. scrsvr is the file that the virus you are talking about attatches itself to in windows 98. SCRSVR.exe is a legitimate file in windows xp. Also, I'm pretty sure there is a difference between svrsvr.exe and SCRSVR.exe.
I tried uninstalling that update and it did not work. I am still searching for answers if anyone has any.
If I reistall XP will I loose all my current files?

Read this:
http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyses/w32opaserva.html
Pay particular attention to the line that says "When executed the worm will create a file called scrsvr.exe".
or read this:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.opaserv.worm.html
Just for the record, in which forum did you find the information that scrsvr.exe is a legitimate file in XP?

OK, I made a mistake. The file I'm talking about is SCRNSVR.EXE, not scrsvr.exe. I do not have a scrsvr.exe file on my PC. Sorry about the mixup.

Oh yeah, the link where it talks about the SCRNSVR.exe file is this...http://web.ask.com/redir?bpg=http%3a%2f%2fweb.ask.com%2fweb%3fq%3dwhy%2bwon't%2bmy%2bscreensaver%2bactivate%26o%3d0%26page%3d1&q=why+won't+my+screensaver+activate&u=http%3a%2f%2ftm.wc.ask.com%2fr%3ft%3dan%26s%3da%26uid%3d240abe1c740abe1c7%26sid%3d340abe1c740abe1c7%26qid%3dFC10D3B62945674795030E0AE191DE0E%26io%3d1%26sv%3dza5cb0db0%26o%3d0%26ask%3dwhy%2bwon't%2bmy%2bscreensaver%2bactivate%26uip%3d40abe1c7%26en%3dte%26eo%3d-100%26pt%3dScreensaver%2bwont%2bactivate%2b-%2bTech%2bSupport%2bGuy%2bForums%26ac%3d6%26qs%3d0%26pg%3d1%26ep%3d1%26te_par%3d153%26te_id%3d%26u%3dhttp%3a%2f%2fforums.techguy.org%2ft126178%2fs0cd91ae100ec48277b7602824d951b08.html&s=a&bu=http%3a%2f%2fforums.techguy.org%2ft126178%2fs0cd91ae100ec48277b7602824d951b08.html&qte=0&o=0
Kind of long but that's it. It doesn't directly say that the file is legitimate, but that is what I got out of it.
If this is not the problem, do you have any other suggestions?
Thanks again
