Are we talking about the built in screensaver program that comes with XP Pro...or is it an add-on that you downloaded.

This information has a lot to do with determining the fix.

Ok,

Then I take it that you have navigated to control panel > display > screensaver and chose the screensaver that you like and set the wait time outs to activate it.

If you have Cyberlink's Power DVD then it could cause this issue...

Only if you have it then:

Turn off the PCMService.exe program
1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig, and then click OK.
2. On the Startup tab, click to clear the PCMService startup item check box.
3. Click Apply, and then click Close.
4. When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Restart.
*******************
In older versions of McAfee Virus Scan there were issues that caused the screensaver to not operate...have to look at their site for the fix

If you use the Windows Security option to lock a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer or a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer that resides in a workgroup, your computer's screen saver functionality may not work.

Maybe one of those will help you out

Do you check for, and remove, Spyware ??
Spyware info.from Microsoft
Most Virus and Spyware scans are likely to work better in Windows Safe-Mode.

Do you have Service Pack 2 ??
Are you the only User Account on the computer ??
Do you have password protection set for screensaver ??
