Screen Resolution-How Do You Revert?

December 2, 2009 at 05:58:33
Specs: windows xp

Everything was fine until I decided to fine tune Display

When the slider under Screen resolution was dragged
to the extreme right and then Apply button was
clicked the screen went black and then totally weird
(resolution changed to the degree I can't make
anything out...)

How do I revert to the previous setting?

Boot into Windows safe mode and lower the resolution from there.

Just did a test on my own system. On my system a change of screen resolution in safe mode doesn't change the resolution in normal mode. If that turns out to be the same for you your only recourse is to do a system restore in safe mode. Choose a restore point that was made before you messed around with your display setting. After a successful restore you display in normal mode should be back to usability.

...or get a magnifying glass :D lol

are you sure you can't see enough to guess your way into changing in the same manner you changed it in the first place? right-click the desktop and choose the option furthest down in the bottom, then click on the last tab and adjust the slider to the left, then hit the button farthest to the right which is apply.

if you have a branded pc you might even have short commands for changing the resolution.

another way could be, if it's a laptop, to boot the pc up with an external tv/monitor, that'll most likely force down resolution.

a possible fourth way would be to change your monitor, i.e. borrow someone elses. I'm not really sure but I think the resolution would be lowered.

a way that will most definitely work though is boot into safe mode and uninstall the VGA driver (display driver). reboot in normal mode and download and install new drivers.

Lapse of memory here on my part. Tap on F8 when booting but select either:
Enable VGA Mode - or
Last Known Good Configuration
