Specs: Windows XP, 2.4 ghz / 512mb ram

hi, everytime i turn on my computer after the dell screens comes up, the screen goes blank and the computer doesnt seem to be responding, i have to keep restarting the computer which is certainly not good for its health. I do this about 3/4 times then i can get up to the windows xp loading screen, a couple of more restarts then i can finally get into my desktop. I have tried reinstalling the drivers but to no avail, i have uninstalled the video card and rebooted system but that doesnt help either, is there any other solutions ppl can offer me please, much appreciated, the monitor works fine on other pcs so its not a fault with that, thanks

Possible that the harddrive is not running at its normal speed,
freezing up or slowing down. Or has quit.
My computer took 20 min. to boot the other day.
I was watching the HDD activity indicator light,
and it would remain on, and not rapidly blinking.
Mechanical devices do have problems.

Harddrive manufacturers have software for download for testing HDD.

As for my laptop, I had it off for several months, then took over one hour to get the harddrive cranked up to speed.

Also DUST inside Desktop computers can gum up harddrives.
Is yours clean.????

How old is your Dell system? Could be that it's slowing down with age. If that's not an issue, are you doing a regular defragmentation? Degramenting your HD helps speed it up by bringing together files for a particular program so the cpu doesn't have to go all over the HD to find then which speeds up seek time. Also doing a Check Disk on a regular basis when you defragment helps even more.
