Screen goes black after log in

Specs: Windows xp, 512
I am working on a friends laptop.. It is a Toshiba Qosmio F10.. She said she turned it on one day and it never loaded, just went black.. So I tried, it loaded to the windows logo, then it goes black, but you can hear it when it's finished loading you just can't see anything. I tried to change the resolution in safe mode, but once I go to save it goes back to a black screen. I booted it in VGA mode, and can get everything, but all to big, try to change the resolution again and same thing. I don't know anything about Toshiba's. I also tried to use the recovery cd, but can't find where to reformat it. I thought maybe doing that might help as well. I think it's the color, but what do I know.. lol Is getting very frustrating. Any help??? Oh ya, when I go to safe mode there are red lines..
