I recently had a hard drive failure and had to replace my hard drive. I had installed Win98SE on the old drive (same Motherboard, CPU, video card used for new drive). When I purchased the new drive I decided that I was going to purchase Win XP Pro (because I had problems with Win 98 locking up) and start with a clean OS install on the new drive. I Installed Win XP Pro. Now about 75% of the time Win XP Pro will boot to the user screen (where you select which user you will be signing in as) and upon clicking the user and signing in it begins to transition from the sign in screen to the desktop and my computer screen starts flickering as the desktop appears. The screen alternates from a picture of the desktop to a black screen back to a picture of the desktop and this continues. You are able to see the mouse moving when the desktop appears but you are unable to get a response from the computer when clicking on the start menu, or any icons. At this point you have to hold the main power switch in until the power goes off completely and try booting again.
I thought it was a video card driver problem so I downloaded a new driver for the video card. This didn't help so I placed a call to the BFG/Nvidia technical support line. They had me check a few things and then said it might be the the motherboard drivers or bios causing the problem.
Following is the information about my computer:
Motherboard: ECS P4VXASD2+
CPU: Intel Pentium 4 Processor (2400Mhz)
Bios Type: American Megatrends
Bios Date: 01/17/03
Bios ID: 62-0117-001131-00101111-040201-VIA_P6-P4VXASD2+
Chipset: VIA 82C3128 rev 1
OS: Windows XP Version: 5.1.2600 Service Pack 1
Bios ROM: In Socket, size 256K
Memory Installed: 512MB
Video Card: BFG Asylum Ti4200 128MB DDR/GeFORCE4/AGP/250MHzThanks for your help.
Doug

Try reseating your video card. Also check the cable connection at the video card and monitor. The cable often gets bumped or damaged if it is pushed too close to the wall.
