Comment:

I havent added or taken out any graphics cards or anything like that, no new programs or uninstalling, did nothing and today I booted my laptop, dell logo comes up kinda scrambled. It then goes to the screen where you choose Safe Mode, startup normally, etc. If I choose Safe Mode it shows a bunch of file paths, then stops on "....\windows\system32\drivers\mup.sys". If I start the computer up normally it just goes completely scrambled, cant see anything.

are you sure that you waited long enough for safe mode to come up? Sometimes it takes quite awhile for it to initialize. Once in safe mode, you can probably try a system restore.

If you have an XP CD, you may want to try a repair install

Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

Don't be fooled and suspect that mup.sys is the problem. It's normally the last thing you see before the long delay while windows gets his act together.

Once you manage to get to safe mode you should opt for Last Known Good Configuration because your problem is hardware-related. Read the article below that explain it all.

System restore did not work. Last known good configuration did not work. I did a video memory diagnostic test and it failed with error code 5300:0119
If I go into normal mode (or last known good config) it shows the windows logo with some minor scramble issues, but still very ligible, then it goes totally berzerk scrambled, goes to black for awhile, then it goes to blue screen of death... only its not a regular blue screen of death. It's green and every half second goes all green with some verticle yellow lines for a second, then goes back. I can barely read what it says but it says it has a problem with "nv4_disp"
Also if I go into safe mode with networking, my networking doesn't work.
I feel so lost.

ok, through some complex long iratating methods i shal not get into... I deleted the old driver and reinstalled it. I can now get into normal mode however my screen still scrambles and takes a very long while to acutally get into windows, also I do not have widescreen anymore so the screen is all fuzzy on desktop and stuff.

Athex,

Click on the link below. It will take you straight to Dell Support site. There are plenty of threads complaining about the same M170 nv4_disp problem.

Hey guys, I finally got it working... after many grueling days of trying, and giving up. I figured out that I can start it up just fine perfectly working if I unplug it first. then replug it back in once booted.

wow.... something so simple.... muah! I'm very please, I got my 1920x1200 32bit resolution back. ^_^

ok, funny story. forget everything ive said before this, the faulty power adapter or w/e.
so... that idea failed, so i give up n decide ima just take it all apart, put it back together, see if that does anything. I flip over my laptop and theres these 2 fat dust bunnies clogging a couple intakes..... man.... even simpler that i thought. I brushed them off, and now all my problems are solved.... man do i feel stupid.
