Does anyone know how to schedule a task using Windows XP Home Edition? Regardless of how I try to schedule a task I get the following message: "The scheduled task did not run because an incorrect password or user name was entered." I never established a "user name", so I don't think that's the issue. I've tried using the schedule tasks wizard. I've tried scheduling tasks with and without using passwords, the same message appears. I've tried to set a password with the wizard, and I've tried to set a password after scheduling the task by clicking on the task in the Scheduled Tasks window, clicking the "Set Password" button. I've also tried to set the password clicking at the top of the Scheduled Tasks window on "Advanced", "At Service Account" and clicking the "This Account" radio button then entering and confirming the password. I'm still unable to get the scheduled task to run. Nothing works! I've also tried to find information using the Help - Index, using the procedures they provided, but the scheduled task still will not run.

When you boot the system, do you have to log in or does it go straight into windows? If it does, that is your problem. You need to log in.

When I start up or reboot the computer I don't log in, the computer goes straight into Windows. With my other computer which uses Windows ME, I can schedule tasks without having to log into the system on start up or reboot. Is this a unique feature of XP?

I'm not sure why you have to but trust me. I dealt with the same problem at a clients web site and spent a few hours scratching my head until I figured it out.

I was setting up a task to back up important data to an external HDD and it would never run, always failed.

Went home and tried to duplicate the problem, I could not. I log into my XP box so when I went back I setup the account so you had to type in a password and bingo, it started working. Why? I have no idea. I don't question a lot of things once I get them working properly.

They are running XP Home as well and I run XP Pro but having the login was the only way I could schedule a task.
