Just a quick question: Is it possible to scan a document with a fax machine and put it on the computer as a file? If so, how would I go about doing this?

Depends on what the device is. What's the make and model?

If is a FAX only machine that only has a phone line connection then the only way would be if you had a phone modem that was also a FAX card. I use one of those to receive FAXES. Once the FAX is in the computer the file can be manipulated. This would require two phone lines.

If the machine is a multifunction machine there may be easier, more direct ways.

Not normally but it depends on the machine. Unless you have someway of connecting the machine to a computer for that purpose like a USB port or something similar them no. Standalone fax machines usually send their output direct to the modem.

You can get pretty cheap scanners, printers copiers these days.

I have seen them advertised for as little as £30.00/$65.00

Not sure(fax machine at work). Would it need a USB port or could I send it down the phone line or something? In other words, what capabilities would the fax machine need in order to do this? Sorry about the lack of information. Any information on this is appreciated though. Need to figure out how to email a receipt to the boss(not bruce springsteen).. heh.

To be scan capable there has to be a menu choice for scan configuration in addition to a network interface in the fax machine.

Otherwise you would need dialup/modem to your computer along with fax recieve software. Then you can fax yourself the scan.

Understand that, though its a file, it is a picture not an editable document.

Did you ever read the manual? It has options how to use the scanning functions.

Take the receipt down to the local Kinco's (some public libraries allow this also)along with a flash drive or floppy or cd and have them copy it to the other media for you and then you can download it to your pc and email it. Uless you want to spend lots of time and money and energy trying to buy and set up a fax on your computer ...Kinco's would be the easiest and cheapest way out!

If you look thru the manual the unit does NOT scan as in scan to file. It "scans" as in it will store the scan to be later faxed or faxed to multiple locations.

Buy a new multipurpose machine that will print, copy, scan, fax and maybe more. Most of these will come with bundled software. If you find one that has paperport 9 or better bundled with it consider this purchase. Other software may include an OCR program like textbridge. A scanner by itself is almost usless. Software that works is the key to using the thing instead of it just sitting there.

If you can see your way to doing it, get a machine as described above that is Color Laser based. The quality and overall cost of ownership will be worth the extra. Also, a scanner that is both a flatbed AND a shettfed is the best of both worlds. Automatic document feeder is great too. If you already have a decent printer then look at a stand alone scanner as described above.

To add to my response above I am providing a link to the exact scanner I have had for a year and wouldn't give it up. The bundled software are full dated versions of excellent utilities.
