My scanner is a Umax Astra 600S. The problem is that no matter what I set the Scanner ID to, windows XP keeps detecting my scanner. That would be good, but it detects it 8 times and as a result I have 8 scanners in my Device Manager. They all are linked to the same port with same options and everything. Why is it being found as 8 copies?
Thanks,
JAMIE

You are using an incompatible VistaScan driver for the Umax UDS-IS11 ISA SCSI.
XP will always find the scanner upon booting, until you get 8 scanners.email me at serville@email.com. I will let you know how to make it work in XP and also the working driver for the UDS-IS11.

I have the same problem with Umax Vista S12 scsi scanner with adaptec SCSI card.
have you a soltution ?Thank You

Quoted from Chris:
Here is how to make it work.
You should download the UDS-11driver for Win2k. Funnily, it is only available in Umax Germany. Here is the address below:
http://www.umax.de/support/upd_PC.htm (third from last)
Or use this link to directly download it: http://www.umax.de/download/ScanPC/dtc3x8x-win2k.zip
Before installing, make sure you DISABLE the “Automatically Restart when System Failure” in Control Panel / System / Advanced / StartUp&Recovery / Settings.
Uncheck the “Automatically Restart”. This is important as you might be trapped in an evil reboot cycle if you don’t disable this.
Installing the driver:
- Unzip the driver to a temporary directory in your harddisk
- Use “Add Hardware Wizard” in Control Panel, and choose to manually select the location of the driver. Point to the unzipped directory
- After installing, you should go directly to ControlPanel / System / Hardware / Device Manager. There you will see “Umax UDS-IS11 ISA SCSI” listed with a problem.
- Double click your “Umax UDS-IS11 ISA SCSI” and go to “Resouces Tab”, and Set Configuration Manually.
- Click once on the “I/O address Range” to select it, and click “Change Setting”. You should choose 0340-035F from the list. This is the ONLY I/O address range that UDS11 can work with.
- Reboot, and you will find the card works without a problem. Check in Device Manager.
Installing the Scanner Twain driver:
- If you use VistaScan, make sure you use VistaScan driver version 3.5x or higher.
- Install the driver as usual. At the end of the installation, depending on your system, there could be an error “VSSetup caused an access violation in RPCRT4.DLL at xxxxx. Close or Ignore”. Choose “Ignore” , as this is a minor error. The driver itself has been installed successfully.
Note: It is possible, in some system, XP will give a warning at the end of VistaScan installation that some system files has been overwritten, and ask you to insert the XP original CD to recover these system files automatically. At about the same time, VistaScan installation is completed and ask for a reboot.
You should go to the XP’s warning window first, and recover these system files BEFORE you continue with the reboot. After recovering, you can go back to VistaScan installation window to proceed with the reboot.
- After reboot, XP will find your scanner automatically, which shows up in the Device Manager / Imaging Devices. XP will also install its own built-in WIA Twain driver (based on VistaScan 2.xx which only provides basic scanning features). So, you have 2 Twain driver to use : one from XP called “WIA Umax Twain”, and VistaScan. I suggest you choose VistaScan as it has much better support for advanced scanning.
You can manually choose which Twain driver to use from any imaging applications by choosing “Twain Sources” from the menu.
Everything will work fine after this.
Best regards,Chris
