I have the same problem, just with a
UMAX Astra 2100.If you got it to work, please help me,
because UMAX tech support won't help me
with the problem.

Same problem here, but with the Astra 3400... Hopefully UMAX will come out with some XP drivers before the end of the month!

Si querés tu escaner UMAX Astra 1220S tenés que insalar el Driver de la Placa SCSI. Es el Domex3291E y podés bajarlo de http://www.domex.com.tw/. Es el Driver para Win2K

Try to install this file on your XP
http://www.umax.com.cn/driver/web_driver/PC/others/WIN2K.exe
Now you need the VistaScan 3.52 drivers, and then open this file.

I concur with response number 6. After installing the driver from WINDOWSxp my unax 1220u worked perfectly.
How and where do I get the Vista Scan driver 3.52. Would it be on the installation CD that I used to install it on WINDOWS ME?

Hey i got my dad's Umax Astra 1200S to work in windows xp pro (2600)
download this driver from domexhttp://www.domex.com.tw/driver/scsi/dtc3181x.exe
it installs the scsi drivers and reboots.
windows then finds the new hardware and the attached scanner. i had to reboot twice and for some reason it found 8 scanners name umax astra 1200s. the first one works. i haven't messed with the others. "if it works fine, don't fix it"

That stuff on the german site is for USB connected scanners. I be interested to know how you got it to work with a 1200S...

Mike's response #12 is right - it worked for me. Thanks ! The main issue is not the UMAX Astra 1200s itself, it is the old unnamed SCSI controller they provided with it. If you use it, the key is to get drivers for that. Its actually a DTC 3181 controller (if you used the bundled one). Use the Add hardware wizard, and choose SCSI controller, then Have Disk and point to the files you downloaded from Mike's post. In my case, I also had to change the address for the DTC 3181 under device manager because of a conflict. Change it until you get to 'No Conflicts.' Then shutdown computer and restart it. If the SCSI controller is now working, which it should be, then XP wil find the UMAX scanner by itself and its working. Since XP (and also Office XP) have built in scanner software, you really dont even need to install or use a newer version of Vista Scan.

btw, I actually used the drivers from this site rather than the one Mike's#12 pointed to, as that site was down. These are actually Win2000 drivers, and you will get a warning that they are not signed or certified, but they work ok for me.

It turns out that the UMAX 1200S is one of the scanners supported by the XP WIA (see Microsoft website). The problem with installation is that the SCSI card that comes with the scanner is not supported. The card is (or was... I doubt there's much market for ISA cards anymore)made by DOMEX. I downloaded an installer from there site (http://www.domex.com.tw/driver/d_3181.htm). After it was installed, XP found the card and then the scanner. The scanner may be driven either from XP's scanner interface or from the UMAX Vistascan software... but, if you plan on using the latter, download it from the Asian site; the US site doesn't have it and there appears to be a glitch in the version available from the German site. Download from ftp://ftp.umax.com.tw/SUPPORT/SCANNER/PC/Vs355s/. The main thing is to get the SCSI card recognized... the XP scanner interface is not quite as good as VistaScan but it saves a big download.

The UK web site for UMAX has XP drivers available for many scanners. This allosed my 1220U to work properlu, with vistascan and lamp controls working.

VistaScan Version 3.55 USB
Please install VistaScan 3.55u and update it with the Updater for WindowsXP below.Updater for WindowsXP (1 MB) [requires installed VistaScan version 3.55u]
VistaScan 355u (9 MB)
Colorprofile (7,6 MB) [optional]

Quick Note: For those people unable to get Magic Match to work under Win2k, if you have Photoshop 6, it will allow you to use the UMAX Twain driver to import a scan with color curves and custom settings etc.

OK, I have read the preceeding messages. I downloaded the drivers for W2K, the problem for me is that they install the drivers for the SCSI card that was supplied with the scanner. I don't use that card, I have a standard SCSI card. The drivers seem to bypass my normal card and then block up access to the scanner via that. It did work with WXP, but, I agree with other people, the interface is not nearly so good, I prefer the options given with the Astra drivers. In Win ME I could delete the driver for the non existent SCSI card, but I don't seem able to do this in XP. Advice??
