Hi All, thx in advance for any help.

I now how to run scandisk in XP using the properties of the drive.... What I would like to know is where I can find the log file of the results of the scan.

As soon as Chkdsk (Scandisk) has finished -go to the Management Console (R click My Computer\Manage)

Then open the Event Viewer\Applications

In there you should see an item called Winlogon - that's it - doubleclick for the Chkdsk summary
