Scandisk won't run at startup

Hi there,
As everyone knows it is not possible to perform a full scan of your hard drive unless you restart your PC. The disk check is scheduled for the next boot when you select "Fix file system errors" and "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors".
This is because Windows XP needs to be unloaded to be fully scanned. Piece of cake then.
However when my PC reboots it says that a disk check has been scheduled and just as it starts to do it, it says that the disk checking has been cancelled. Just like that, for no apparent reason.
Anyone knows why it won't perform a proper disk checking? Thanks for any help.

what file system are you using. fat32 needs to do this but ntfs does not.

Thanks for replying.
Well my HD was formatted in NTFS but still, before I was able to do a full scandisk but it won't run it anymore. My PC restarts, ready to run the disk check and instead of starting, it suddenly stops saying: "A disk check has been scheduled" then "Disk check has been cancelled".
I have done it so many times on my other PCs at home and they all work. I think that the HD might be corrupted so it won't let disk check to run. Or maybe there's some kind of program at startup that prevents it from running. (Norton Antivirus maybe?)
I'll be investigating for my part but I appreciate your help.
Keep me posted if you find anything.

It worked! I was able to run a disk check just like dark told me.
I opened a command prompt window and I typed chkdsk c: /r
Thanks everyone!
