Where can I find scandisk on XP pro?? I really need to run it. Or, are there any programs similiar to scandisk that i can download ?

Try
My Computer/r click local disk c:/properties/tools tab/click check now in error checking
That's where it is in XP Home
Note that due to an icky in XP the error scan may not start until your next boot up.
Good luck

Windows XP uses a tool called CHKDSK to scan hard drives for errors. To run it simply open a command prompt (Start > Run > 'cmd' > OK) and type 'CHKDSK X: /F'. Replace the X with the drive letter you want to scan.
Note that if you need to scan the drive with Windows installed on it (most likely C:) then you will need to reboot your computer. This is not "an icky", it's simply required and very understandable. There's no way to fix problems on a drive that's in use.
If you want to scan the drive for bad sectors (same as a thorough scan in Windows 98) just change the '/F' to a '/R'. Keep in mind that this will take some time to complete.

Is there a difference between running the Error Checking from the Drive Properties and running it from the Command prompt
Thanks - Lesley

The only difference is that if you do it from the Drive Properties you will get a little window showing you the progress of the scan. I use the command prompt because it's faster and easier for me to get to.
They both do the same thing, the two checkboxes are the same as using the /F (top box) or /R (bottom box) switches.

Thanks - I also understand that a Log File is available if chkdsk is Run from the Command Prpmpt - is that so?
