Comment:

I recently upgraded from Windows98 to WindowsXP. I'm still working with a Win98 mentality. Thought I'd run a scan disc on the computer but there doesn't seem to be any program function for that. Am I missing something? Are there any programs I should be running to keep the computer working well? I think defrag was still there.

Click on my computer, then right click on the drive and click on properties. The tab labeled tools contains the error checking program (scan disc).

They have changed the name with XP, Farsighted. It's now chkdsk.

Unlike W98 it won't run while Windows is running.

Quickest way is to type this in the Run box:

chkdisk /f

It will then offer to run it on the next boot and will fix any file system errors it finds.

This is the same as right clicking C drive
/Properties/Tools/Check Now button/top option.

Note that the bottom option (recovering bad sectors) can take a heck of a time to run through.

[Re #2. The posted question has nothing to do with the safety scanner]
