cdsare only in stereo - this means you will only get the left and right front speakers. on some setup's you can tell it to use the other speakers

at home i have a 6.1 setup for my dvd player and i had problems with it at first. then i realised i was using a 7.1 sounce ( Black Hawk Down) is it possible that the dvd's you are using have a 6.1 source???

try different dvds - try black hawk down - they tell you on the back of the case what surround sound the dvd has.
