To open this file using Microsoft Project 98, the person who created the file needs to use Microsoft Project 2000 or Microsoft Project 2002 to save the file to the Microsoft Project 98 file format. Microsoft Project 2000 and Microsoft Project 2002 supports opening from and saving to the Microsoft Project 98 file format, to make it easier for users to share files in mixed-version environments, and to eliminate the need to download a separate converter.

In Microsoft Project 2000 or Microsoft Project 2002, do the following to save a file in Microsoft Project 98 format:

On the File menu, click Save As.
Browse to the location where you want to save the file.
In the Save as type box, click Microsoft Project 98.
Click Save.
You can open this version of the file using Microsoft Project 98. However, any features included in the file that are new to Microsoft Project 2000 or Microsoft Project 2002 will not appear when you open the file in Microsoft Project 98.

Exceptions
The previous procedure will not work if one or both of the following reasons:

Microsoft Project 2000 or Microsoft Project 2002 is installed on the same computer with Microsoft Project 98 . Microsoft recommends that you avoid this configuration, because the two programs cannot successfully reside together.
Files are directly sent from Microsoft Project 2000 and Microsoft Project 2002 in e-mail.
The Send To command in Microsoft Project 2000 automatically sends files in the Microsoft Project 2000.mpp format, even if the file was previously saved in the Microsoft Project 98 format. Microsoft Project 2002 files are automatically saved in the Microsoft Project 2002.mpp format.
