OS: Windows XP Pro SP2
CPU/Ram: Duo/.97GB
Product: Lenovo X61
Comment:

I know there are like a million of these, but I feel like I've tried all the solutions and it didn't work...

I have no idea what to put for CPU/Ram so here is what the thingy says:
Lenovo
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU
T7300 @ 2.00GHz
777 MHz. 0.97 GB of RAM
Physical Address Extension

Hey, I'm having the same issue. I have uninstalled/reinstalled all audio devices. Tried repairing any problems with the original XP install CD.
I've gone to the Lenovo webpage and downloaded (and reinstalled) all of the things that they suggested (that the support guy told me to).
I managed to somehow get it so that it recognizes that I have a recording device, but still the playback device area is grayed out. I've been in device manager and all devices say they are working properly. I've been wherever it is that says that I should check to make sure audio is on and defaults to automatically come on.
And no, my speakers are not muted.
However, I checked the thing about Primary IDE Channel and it says:
Device Type: Auto Detection
Transfer Mode: DMA if available
Current Transfer Mode: Not Applicable... And I think I read somewhere that it isn't supposed to say that.
Any help would be appreciated. Please let me know if there is any additional information I can give to help!!

Try the same procedures while in Safe Mode. You MAY find more than one listing for the devices while in Safe Mode.

street1 - Yes, that is what the support guy from Lenovo had me do before I gave up trying to describe the problem to him.

OtheHill - No, I haven't tried it from safe mode, I'd like a little more specification of what procedures I should be doing from safemode... I read on another response that someone uninstalled all of their audio devices from safe mode then rebooted to let the computer figure out which ones to install, is that what I am doing? I also worry because I know that somehow SoundMax is tied to all this audio stuff and I don't want to mess it up. I accidently uninstalled SoundMax from my computer the first time and that is when my sound got lost. Even after following all the links and downloads on the Lenovo webpage, I got SoundMax and it's devices/drivers back but things are still mixed up.

per - I have NO idea what any of that means, you're gonna have to dumb it down a little for me, when it comes to hardware I have zero knowledge I wouldn't know a motherboard if I was staring right at it.

SyNik - Lenovo systems use a recovery disk set, not a Windows and driver set. There is a utility for Lenovo systems called System Update that uses the model/serial number for automatically installing drivers for the system.

From the complaint it appears the audio driver is not installed correctly.

Without the model number it is hard to point to the correct driver package, if you could provide that it would help, among other points is this a laptop or desktop?

per - Unfortunately, no I don't have that... I'm really not sure what I did with that. If I recall, I had them customize the machine and set everything up before sending it to me, I don't remember if I got any cd's with it.

rrylon - Not too sure what the model number is: I went to System Information and it says System Model - 7675CTO, this is a laptop.

Try downloading SIW.exe to find more information about your computer. Find it below.

Check the Start menu, is there a Thinkvantage section with a utility labeled System Update? If so run it, the utility goes to the Lenovo site and using the model/serial coded in the systemboard it queries a list of drivers and updates tailored for the system, this includes the audio drivers. You can do an auto download that repairs and installs the system drivers.

If the utility is not there you can go to the download site and install it by itself. Once installed you can run it and get the updates.

You could be missing the systemboard/chipset drivers or other critical ones that link to provide system operation.

The site also includes data on your system if you enter the serial number of the unit.

I sell and service Lenovo Thinkpads and find the System Update utility very useful.

Good luck

Richard

You don't need to print out anything. The sound chip should be identified by SIW.

I suggest you try what rrylon has suggested. Download ALL the drivers and whatever else is available For ALL OSes available and burn to disk for future use.

rrylon - I downloaded the thingy and installed it, started running it and got the error message: The Package Index Server is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later. I really don't know what to try next. Is this a temporary site problem, or could be because I am trying to access it from work where there is a big firewall/other security stuff in the way?

OtheHill - yeah, what I meant was that I didn't know exactly what to look at in there... am I looking at Hardware? and then what tab under that, what exactly am I looking for? Also, wondering if there is some other info. I could give you guys to give you a better idea of what I'm working with. As for drivers- as I said before, I called Lenovo support and uninstalled/reinstalled all the drivers that were for my OS type and any other things that he recommended downloading from there. I uninstalled and reinstalled all of them multiple times with no success. If there is something more specific that you could suggest for me to download let me know. I even downloaded a program called Driver Genius Professional Edition to try to help me figure out what is going on, but even that I can't really figure out what I'm supposed to do with...

The site rrylon sent you to is probably down for maintenence.

In SIW you may see a Devices listing, then it may say fake. Doubleclick to expand and you should see a listing for sound. There will be many lines. Post them here for further help.

I had a similar problem and solved it with the following:-

Ok, I have found a working solution, but only if you have my specific problem;

In Device Manager your Audio Device is "Working Properly", however in Sounds and Audio Devices you are told there is "No Audio Device".

After installing XP SP2 the "Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator" stops functioning. This can be confirmed by looking in Device Manager - there should be an entry for this listed under System Devices. If not, then you have the same problem as me and the following fix *should* work...

- Copy C:\WINDOWS\inf\machine.inf to a temporary location
- Edit your copy of machine.inf in Notepad
- Remove line 20 (ExcludeFromSelect=*)
- Run the Add New Hardware wizard
- Select Show All Devices and Have Disk
- Browse to the location of your copy of machine.inf
- Under Standard System Devices, select the Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator

Your audio device should now be recognised.

Hope this helps.
