Comment:

I use an external hard drive on my computer.
Do I need to use the safely remoce icon to remove this drive when I am done or can I just unplug the USB plug. It saysd it is hot swappable but I get a warning when I unplug it that i have not safely removed it.
Thanks in Advance!

It depends. 99% of the time it doesn't matter. But one day you will unplug the drive while there is still stuff in the cache buffer or the OS is still writing to the hard disk and next time you use it your data is corrupted.

Safely remove hardware ensures that all caches and buffers are cleared. All data that has to be written is written and that all file indexes are correctly updated.

Hot-swappable doesn't mean that you can just unplug it whenever you feel like. All hot-swappable means is that you can unplug it while power is still applied.

It's so simple to just click on that little Icon - select your Device and click Stop - why not use it ?
