Hi
i was wondering, after I finish using my external hard drive (usb 2.0) and I click safely remove hardware...should I actually plug out the usb connector or can I simply switch it off via the power connector on the wall?
(when I switch off from wall socket I hear the actual switching off, like some sort of 'parking' but when I remove usb wire i don't actually hear it...)

Either one is ok. But if you aren't going to use it for quite a while, turning the power off will save electricity and might (arguably) save some wear and tear.

The rule of thumb is to always use the Safely remove hardware command. What you do thereafter doesn't matter as aegis stated. If you don't use the Safely remove hardware command and you have some file opened, the file and/or external HD can get corrupted. I have often got a popup box telling me I shouldn't remove the USB device until I close whatever is linked to it.
