Comment:

At times my hard drive stops doing a task and starts making a rythimic clicking sound, which will continue for a matter of seconds, or minutes. While the sound is happening the cpu usage drops to around 2% and skips up to 10% every so often. The computer is not frozen, I can for example open and run another program, but it runs slowly. I have found that it makes this sound when I try to open a jpg file that is corrupted, it also makes this sound for a second or two every time I start the computer. Does anyone know what this is?

Thanks,
John

Clickings sounds are generally the result of bad heads being unable to calibrate with the media servo tracks, which makes the drive keep resetting.
download the diagnostic software that is run from a bootable floppy, from your hard drive manufacturers support download site. to test your drive.

Sounds like a "rhythmic" collapse of your drive. Time to back up and renew the drive. I had a rhythmic tinkle in mine and it lasted two months before it died.
