We keep getting an error message saying run time, debug? If I click no then the same message just keeps popping up and wont let me do anything else on the page. If I click yes then it opens "just-in-time" debugging and doesnt do anything. After trying to research this it seemed that I could use a programme such as Regcure to sort my registry out so downloaded the "free" trial which found LOADS but will only let me fix about 3 erorrs out of a possible 1,500. Is there ACTUALLY a free piece of software to do this or do I have to take a chance and pay £30 and hope that this is actually going to cure the problem.

Secondly I have just spent a long time deleting viruses/removing unwanted spyware on our machine which is now running very fast but it doesn't show a HDD in "My Computer" (It does in the bios). Plus I notice that some things are strange like in the Control Panel/Display it only shows Themes/appearance.settings, but not screen saver or background. Can anyone please help me out with some advice?

Thanks a lot

Quote the exact runtime error message you are getting.

"Secondly I have just spent a long time deleting viruses/removing unwanted spyware on our machine "
"...but it doesn't show a HDD in "My Computer.."

Did the malware have symptoms like this?

- you can't see anything on your C and D drives in My Computer or Windows Explorer.
- pressing the Alt-Ctrl-Del keys at the same time doesn't work - when you RIGHT click on your taskbar Task Manager is greyed out
- text in your taskbar at extreme right - Virus Alert!
- when you click on Start - most things you normally see in the window that pops up are missing, including All Programs, Run, Control Panel, etc.
- you had icons on your desktop for anti-malware programs you did not install yourself
- you cannot delete those icons
- you get frequent messages about there being malware on your computer
- The IE home page has been changed to one for an anti-malware program's site

If so, you probably had the effects of one of the rogue anti-spyware programs that create FAKED symptoms to try to get you to download their software and then buy it. You may have gotten rid of the malware, but some of the things it did may still be present.
Depending on what you had, I may be able to suggest you trying a program that will fix the leftover changes.

Programs that fix registry problems are usually not all that useful for fixing problems caused by changes malware made.

- if your symptoms were similar, the malware be gone but some

Thanks for the reply,
Yes some of these symptons were present before I wiped it all with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware software. I know that my mother-in-law did fall for some of those pop-ups and go with the links that they provided to this rogue software, therefore some of it was definately installed at some point (Probably part of the reason that it took so long to put right again)

Cheers

State the exact runtime error - it may have nothing to do with your other symptoms.
....

If Malwarebytes worked, then this probably will too.
Search for: SmitFraudFix
Running that in Safe mode will restore the leftover settings the rogue anti-malware made back to the way they should be.
It sets your home page to the default one for your IE version, but that is easily changed.
It's continually updated, so get the most recent version.

Some anti-malware software, e.g. AdAware 2008, detects the download file and the executable program it makes - SmitFraudFix.exe - as malware despite the fact it's not (there IS malware called Smit.Fraud).
If you don't want SmitFraudFix.exe to be deleted or quaranteened, add that file name or the folder it's in to the exclude or ignore list in the configuration of the anti-malware that detects it.

If you have more than one user, more than one may have the same symptoms - run SmitFraudFix on each one that has symptoms.

Ok the run time error message was as follows

"A runtime error has occured.
Line: 187
Error: object doesn't support this property or method."

If anyone could help then I'd be very grateful, many thanks

Apparently many things can cause the latter part of that error.

Search the web with the exact error message, until you find something that fits your situation, but keep in mind the line number might be different.

Use:
"Line:" 187 "Error: object doesn't support this property or method"

e.g. if you have SQL server software on your computer:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/249620
.....

The good news is that's probably got nothing to do with the malware you had.

Did you try SmitFraudFix?
