runtime error 5

Specs: Windows XP
I was adding a new anti virus onto my computer without difficulty, then I started to make a CD of music using Itunes, when I kept getting an error message. I then shut down my computer, waited a few minutes and rebooted. When my computer started up I got an error message saying .. runtime error 5 at 010058AD and no task bar or icons were present. I can't get onto the internet or anything on that computer. What can I do. I also have mcafee virus on the computer but it needs to be updated.

Lady J, I'm extremely paranoid. I look on any 'free AV' with a jaundiced eye unless it's a known good one. Which AV did you add? Possible you got a nasty like a worm/trojan along with it? Some 'cleaner' proggies are just ruses.
McAfee can be a real bear to remove. If you decide to, find an eraser. There're several around. Having more than one's fine, but be sure not to run more than one at a time. They don't play well together.
Be aware that a virus and a Trojan are similar, but not the same. Many times, an AV detects one it can't clean, other times, it gets missed entirely.
If you need to clean a worm/trojan, Superantispyware can do the job and you can get it free @:
http://www.superantispyware.com/
among other places. They have a Vista compatible version if needed.
If it turns out that you need to use it, be sure to update prior to running and disable 'restore' (restart after cleaning) so it doesn't get put back. They just released a new update recently and it changes all the time. Things are in a constant state of flux.
There're several top rated free AVs around.
I use/recommend Avast! (free @: http://www.avast.com/avad1.htm) if you need a good freebie.
